A new Dementia Resource Centre will be launched in Peterborough this week.
The new centre, which will be run by Alzheimer’s Society and has been funded by Peterborough City Council, will be officially opened by Alzheimer’s Society supporter and star of ITV’s Lewis, Josette Simon and Councillor Wayne Fitzgerald, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care at Peterborough City Council on Friday, September 5.
There will also be the Peeterborough Memory Walk at Ferry Meadows on Sunday, raising money for The Alzheimer’s Society
The launch, co-hosted by Alzheimer’s Society, Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, follows a £500,000 refurbishment and creation of new facilities in the rear ground floor of the Lincoln Road Neighbourhood Hub.
Around 60 representatives of local and national charities, the NHS and city council will join 20 service users and dementia carers at the launch event. They will enjoy entertainment provided by the Alzheimer’s Society Singing for the Brain group and have the opportunity to attend a Dementia Friends information session.
The Dementia Resource Centre will act as a hub for dementia support offering advice, information and services including dementia cafés, activity groups and training for carers.
Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager in Peterborough, Kevin Bowyer said: “Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community yet far too many people with the condition are left feeling isolated and lonely and unable to access vital services. This new Dementia Resource Centre will be a one-stop shop for advice, information and support, ensuring people living with dementia and their carers in Peterborough are able to get the help they need in everyday life.
“With both the Dementia Resource Centre launch and Peterborough Memory Walk happening this week, it is proving to be an important and exciting time for the city as it continues working towards becoming dementia friendly.
The new centre includes a relaxed café style waiting area and space for confidential assessments and consultations. Alzheimer’s Society, NHS Memory Clinic and a seven day a week dementia day service will also be based in the new centre.
Alzheimer’s Society will be working with key partners from the local health and social care sector to deliver a wide range of holistic services, such as opticians, podiatrists and dentistry, hairdressers, and cookery classes for carers not used to cooking.
Cllr Fitzgerald said: “I am delighted to be able to join users, carers and our partners at our new Dementia Resource Centre for what promises to be a fantastic event. This new centre will help provide residents affected by dementia the care and support they need.”
